Blepharoplasty: among most popular surgeries
Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is among the most popular plastic surgeries in the world. In 2020, it was the third most performed – 1.225.540 – behind liposuction – 1.525.197 and breast augmentation – 1.624.281 in total. In the US, in that year, eyelid surgery was on second place – 325.112 surgeries – according to data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, trailing slightly behind rhinoplasty with352.555 in total.
Many attribute this to COVID and the Zoom-effect, and while the Pandemic may have quickened the pace, the trend was set in motion far before the world shut down. “Now, with the advent of working from home virtually, there is a much larger volume of facial surgery overall because it is now easier to hide during the healing process and a heightened awareness of one’s facial appearance”, says San Francisco-based plastic surgeon and American Society of Plastic Surgeons member, Carolyn Chang, MD, who adds that the cultural shifts that COVID brought along with it have highlighted the trend.
Blepharoplasty has a long history as an effective procedure. Most people get eyelid surgery for aesthetic reasons, but for some patients, it is medically necessary in order to obtain a full field of vision. The vast majority of people who have had a blepharoplasty are fully satisfied with their results. Eyelid surgery can make you look years younger after a single procedure, boosting your self-esteem.
